I've been looking for places I can hike solo and feel safe doing so. On Maple Mountain, you can't get super lost, things are well-marked, and it's relatively unlikely you'll encounter scary wildlife because it's surrounded by humans and ocean on all sides. It's also quiet and really west-coasty. I look forward to going back when I have more time to explore the other trails, especially the Blue/Yellow loop.
Before you go, check this website for logging closures: https://www.northcowichan.ca/EN/main/departments/parks-recreation/mountain-biking-hiking.html
Today there was quite a bit of storm damage (see photo, tons of fallen trees around) but nothing impassable on the pink trail.
I suggest wearing waterproof hikers with grippy soles (today was wet and I slipped once regardless of my grippy soles and poles).
