Attempted the hike on December 29th, but noticed that the conditions weren’t ideal. We had checked the avalanche conditions prior to leaving, and knew they were moderate but proved to be more extreme. There was rapid melting and storm slabs. Noticed small slides in the first kilometer crossing the path. At about 2kms off of the Bowen lookout trail we came to a large clearing that had a rather significant, fresh avalanche that completely covered the path. Made a group decision not to continue. As we were deciding to go ahead or not, another couple of hikers decided to climb over the avalanche debris and continue. We turned back and ended up going to the Bowen lookout; 10 minutes later, that couple showed up and said that they saw another big slide further down the trail and had also decided to turn back. Will try again when conditions improve.
Make sure to check the avalanche warnings on avalanche.ca before you head out and know what to look for.
