Did this hike as a little family trip from the upper parking lot. Since the road is quite covered in snow beyond the parking lot, we continued on it past the gate and did not deviate onto the path until far later. Fortunately, the lookout trail is well used so the turn off, even with the snow present, was quite evident. There is also a handy little metal post with a green sign on it to officially mark the way. We got there when there were not too many people, and left when a rather large hiking group appeared breaking the silence that we were enjoying. On the way down we passed several more groups heading up.
