I hike a lot. Some local trails I have hiked more times than I can remember but every time its a little different. The leaves may be changing, or wildlife may be more abundant, or the view might be just right, which brings me to this post. Given the cold weather I thought I would skip the minus 12 temp's up on the mountains and do something a little lower. Maybe a trail with some water features that might have frozen so I decided on Saw Blade falls via the woodland walk on Burke Mtn. This trail in the past has often been a muddy affair, so I figured the mud would be frozen, and falls should also hopefully be frozen. The trail starts at the gate just before the gun club. I took the mtn bike trail just left of the gate which comes out on spur 1 right where the woodland walk begins. The Woodland walk trail continues on to the power-line, where you will pass this bailey bridge which just happened to be nicely frozen providing a taste of what was to come.
Continue on down the power-line road until you see all the signs and then you re-enter the forest. This section of the Woodland Walk has a nice assortment of old Cedar stumps giving you an idea of what this must have looked like 100 years ago.
The trail is well marked and you will eventually come to another set of signs pointing the way to saw-blade falls. Once at the falls the decent is a bit steep but manageable. At the base you will be treated to quite the sculpture courtesy of mother nature. On the way back We decided to take the road which intercepts spur1 which had several large streams that needed to be crossed. The streams and rocks within are covered in ice so bring your spikes. Much of the trail as a whole has fair bit of ice so I would bring them regardless.
