We started our snowshoeing right at the highway due to heavy snow. There had been some x-country skiers that broke the first section of the trail to the parking lot but it was still quite soft to the sides of their track.
At the parking lot we split away toward the Falls Lake trail. The snow was deep, up to waist, even chest in some areas. We had a lot of trouble finding the trail that was so easy in the summer. We didn't have a GPS track so we followed what seemed the path of least resistance. We ended up following what appeared to be an access road in the general direction of the lake. The going was very slow, the trail steep and the trail breaking was tough work. After 2 hours we called it quits. The best we could tell, we had passed the head of the lake and were travelling down the right side in the tree line.
We turned around and made our way back to the car in less than 45 minutes...a packed trail is way easier than breaking trail.
A fantastic day out. I wish we had found the lake but the scenery was worth the work.
