The Hayward Lake Railway Trail is an easy hike with minimal elevation, start from the South beach parking lot and return, approx 12km and finished in about 2 hrs. Trail is well maintained. The lower part of the trail was closed for construction and no access across the Ruskin Dam, at the end of the trail where there is gate saying trail closed, you will find a small path that lead you up to a viewpoint where you can see the panoramic view of the Hayward Lake Reservoir. This trail is ideal for the whole family.
