Feb 10, 2020
2020 has started off with a "boooooooo!!!" Horrible weather on the weekends and avy risk being thrown around wildly due to large dumps on crusty layers... but Mount Nutt is doable year round, so no excuses unless the road through Golden Ears is actually closed.
Quick beta... bring microspikes if you want to get from 1st lookout (just as you hit the ridge after the lake) until the next set of lookouts (East at Crickmere and West at Golden Ears, Alouette, Edge, Evans and Blanchard's Needle) as there is crusty snow under the trees as you ascend the shoulder. Bring snowshoes if you want to get to the "End of Route!" and look out at Robie Reid and Mount Nutt (South Peak proper) and Alouette Lake. There is deep stuff up on the top.
The little loop at the dog leg left in the GPX track is the "easy & tricky" routes combined (see photos).
IMPORTANT: Detours through both Alouette Beach parking lots, through the inner ranger booth area and behind the concession stand before you jog over to get to East Canyon due to fallen trees and road damage from last storm.
Hundreds of people getting out on Sunday but I only passed one couple on the Nutt trail.
Total Time: 5hr 26min
Distance: 11.5km
Cumulative Gain: 1200m
Have fun and maybe I will see you out there!
