We did a long loop of about 16 miles, 3800' gain - most of the elevation gain is at the end, which is taxing. Trail description.
Snow patches around 6000'. Mud patches and overgrown trails in Badger Creek wilderness.
High prairie trailhead is next to a couple of lovely meadows, now filled with shooting stars. This is the best shooting star display I've ever seen. If you want to see that, go there now. Probably will be gone in a week.
I wouldn't recommend this long loop, because of the lower elevation trails are overgrown, muddy and boring (limited view). But if you do this loop, now is a good time, because of wood land flowers at low elevation and wet condition, and high prairie flowers at high elevation and dry slopes.
I would park at Hwy 35, and do the regular Gumjunwac trail to Lookout Mt, and do a loop to the Flag Pole lookout. Maybe similar elevation gain, but more views.
